The direct object is someone or something that is directly acted upon by the verb. An object usually comes after the verb and represents something or someone that is affected by the action described. Nouns and pronouns can also play the role of object in a sentence. So the most basic role for a noun is to act as the subject for a verb that follows it. In most cases, the subject is a noun or a pronoun. The subject describes some person or thing, and the verb describes an action carried out by the subject. 
A complete sentence usually consists of at least a subject and a verb.
